The Casual Vacancy

SOOOO.. I have finally finished with JK Rowling's "The Casual Vacancy". Let me start with the positives first. Her writing style is still impeccable. The way she provides a deep insight into the minds and behaviors of a man, woman, or even a teenager is extremely commendable. The way she shifts her tone from a teenager to an adult makes one wonder whether its the same person writing the whole content. Unfortunately, I didnt fall in love with any of the characters from this particular novel. Sukhwinder Jawanda is one character that invokes a person's pity for her and anger for her mother for not understanding her problems. Krystal Weedon is the major character around whom the story revolves. JK Rowling succeeds in exposing the hypocritical, officious and evil souls that dwell in our society and how someone with no support from home becomes a victim emotionally as well as physically in this world. Krystal Weedon stands as the lone brave soul who can be admired for her courage to face the society, her class mates and the sanity with which she deals her surroundings. As the plot unveils, the reader can start admiring her for her positive traits. Now for the negatives:

When JK Rowling said its a novel for adult, she literally MEANT it. I wasnt expecting it to have R-rated content in it and somehow the use of the F word still doesnt go well with me. I know I am just being weird but JK ROWLING, the creator of Harry Potter series using abusive language and sexually explicit content!? deeeep troubles in digesting that. :S Secondly, why on earth is it even titled The Casual Vacancy? She could have easily titled it," The problems of Psychotic Parents and their Equally Demented Teenagers" -_-. I wasnt expecting it to be surrounding the teenagers and their problems with their uncommunicative parents completely. Where Harry Potter was relatable to the whole wide world, The Casual Vacancy leaves out the other morally-and-culturaly-bound part of the world behind. I know she intended the adults to be the audience for this novel but still, I was a little taken aback by the storyline. I wont do it justice if I dont mention that I did cry and laugh wherever it was required (not trying to spoil it for people who are planning to read it) but I still expected much more from the queen. Though the novel is still filled with some quotable quotes, I dont think I would be giving it a second read in near future.

 P.S: Rowling knows Facebook and Rihanna exist. :D
